Inspirational, Badass, and Strong Women in Fiction
International Women’s Day is March 8, so this post is all about women in fiction. There are few things I love most in characters than a strong, badass, leading lady. I think that this encompasses a variety of different kinds of bravery and strength, which can sometimes be a quiet kind and sometimes in a more outward courage.
Read on to hear about some of my favorite women in fiction:
Hermione Granger (Harry Potter):
I think many of us grew up with Harry Potter, or have experienced the wizarding world is various forms throughout the years. One of the most inspiring characters for me has been Hermione- who is fiercely loyal, bookish beyond belief, and full of heart. Her strength during the moments of intense fighting and in the quiet moments of suffering, she remains level-headed. I just admire her character so much!
Lydia (The Serpent King)
I recently read and fell in love the characters in The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. I loved the strength of Lydia, who every day was unapologetically herself, especially in the face of her peers who judged her endlessly. She didn’t lose sight of her dream, and I found that form of strength beautiful.
Celaena Sardothian (Throne of Glass)
To call Celaena Sardothian a strong female character would be an understatement. It kind of slaps you in the face with how aggressive and strong she is, which kind of threw me off in the beginning. I love her so much more as she grows as a character, and without losing her badass tendencies, learns to exist relationally to others too. She really is one of the most resilient characters I have ever read about, it’s amazing.
Delilah Bard (ADSOM)
My love for Delilah Bard is endless. She is so incredibly badass and never takes no for an answer. Her heart for adventure is beautiful, and I enjoy following along with her on her journeys.
Agnieszka (Uprooted)
Agnieszka! She’s amazing. Growing up thinking she would never be taken by The Dragon, she ends up having to deal with innumerable challenges. She must struggle to come in to her powers, and ends up being so brave in their fight against the evils in the forest. She is proud of her small village by the Spindle, and draws her strength from the roots she has in the valley. I loved her.
Lucille (This Raging Light)
Lucille displays the kind of strength that is required of people when they are close to losing all hope- her parents are no longer around to support her and her sister, and she is forced to grow up and be the breadwinner for their small family, all while navigating school and love and friendships. She quietly strong, and so incredibly brave.
Celia (The Night Circus)
Celia’s mother commits suicide and as a result, she must grow up under the terrible, abusive control of her father. He treats her like a pawn in his game, which she techinacally is, but it is such a difficult situation to grow up in. I found her amazing for her resilience in such a life, and her ability to find love and beauty in a world that was cruel to her.
The lovely Rachel at Beauty and the Bookshelf has decided to host a three week long challenge called:
GET UP OFFA THAT SLUMP: A BLOGGING EXTRAVAGANZA!
I am so excited to be joining in on this, and I think it will help me get back into the swing of blogging on a regular basis, or at least I hope so!

Badass female protagonists always have been and always will be my favorite, and your list has me jumping up and down with joy, especially Hermione, Calaena, Celia, and Delilah (ADSOM is everything!!). The buzz on The Serpent King has exploded recently. Thanks to you, I’m adding that book and Uprooted to my TBR. Looking forward to reading about more kickbutt girls!

And same with Delilah – she’s so confident, it’s amazing 😀
