I read this over Thanksgiving break, in the midst of visiting with friends and writing a ten page history paper. Just like the other books in this series, I didn’t want to put it down! I was not expecting the story to go in the direction that it did, but I loved it anyways!
Some thoughts:
♥ The beginning was a little slow! Honestly, it’s a pretty big book, so I understand that it takes awhile to get back into the story. With the gang kind of doing separate things we saw a lot of perspectives but that made every part of the story slow, especially in the beginning.
♥ The witches: I didn’t love this aspect of Heir of Fire. Manon Blackbeak is an interesting character, I guess, but I hated reading from her perspective. For the majority of this book she is evil, cut-throat, and cunning. I pretty much skimmed through her chapters. Not because they weren’t well written, but because I just HATED being in her head. I found myself sighing every time I turned the page and saw her name again. I will admit it got better by the end, there was a decent amount of character development, but the beginning was like pulling teeth getting through her chapters.
♥ ROWAN: let me just say that I love him so much, he is a wonderful character. I find him perfect for balancing out Celaena, and for training her to use her magic, because I think more than anyone else so far Rowan gets her. He just does. No one else has a past like Celaena, but he has experienced the same worldcrushing brokenness that she has. If there is anyone I want by her side protecting and caring for her, it’s him. hands down.
♥ Character development: We continue to see great character development in Heir of Fire! I can not believe how different everyone is, only two books later. Especially Celaena. She has gone through tremendous growth, and I honestly think it’s for the better! She is strong, powerful, yet still in the process of healing.
I love what Maas is doing with this series! For the most part, the new characters introduced are just as fascinating as the ones we’ve known for awhile now. The plot continues to be intricately woven among the characters, and I really never want to put these books down. Despite a slow beginning, I think this was great for a book in the middle of a series (3/6). It’s common for the middle to drag a bit, but after a hundred pages or so I was enthralled once again with this series. Maas is an amazing writer, and I loved this book!
